The Society for German-American Studies is an international professional organization dedicated to encouraging and advancing the scholarly study of the history, language, literature, and culture of the German element in North America. This includes coverage of the immigrants and their descendants from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other German-speaking areas of Europe. Members of the Society include representatives from various academic disciplines who share a common interest in German-American Studies.
In support of its goals, the SGAS:
- Publishes scholarship and news of the discipline in the Yearbook of German-American Studies and the quarterly Newsletter.
- Holds an Annual Symposium for members to present the results of research on German-American topics.
- Awards grants to qualified applicants in support of research and publication in the field of German-American Studies.
- Encourages the production and dissemination of educational materials in its areas of interest as a public service.
- Assists researchers, teachers, and students interested in the German element in North America.
- works to improve cross-cultural relations between German-speaking countries and North America, and works to foster contacts between researchers in the areas of its interest.
NEWS
2012 SYMPOSIUM: Dates have been set for the 36th Annual Symposium of the Society for German-American Studies. The event will take place April 12-15, 2012, at the University of Kansas. The theme for the Symposium will be "Transforming America: Immigrants, Explorers, and Exiles." Watch this website for updates.
